The Mono Cliffs summer greenery

Written by

North of Toronto there are many great greenspaces, in the form of Provincial Parks and conservation areas. Mono Cliffs Provincial Park is one of these great spaces.

Following the Niagara Escarpment, the Mono Cliffs park has a lot of great things going for it: great hiking and biking opportunities, and low cost to visit. This is one of the first parks I've seen with a parking meter which charges per-hour, which I'm happy to see. Far too many parks chage flat daily rates that discourage regular, short visits from those with lower incomes brackets.

For myself, I don't mind paying $12 for parking a whole day if I'm hiking the whole day -- but for a 30 minute hike it seems unreasonable. Mono Cliffs charged about $3.50 for 2 1/2 hours of parking.

Politics aside, this photo was from our first visit to this park -- or to any park in the region. Notable sightings were Turkey Vultures, Red-Eyed Vireos, and Cedar Waxwings.

Well, the Vireos were technically not a "sighting" as much as a "hearing".

I look forward to some day having a DSLR camera with a great zoom lens to be able to take decent bird photos.
